The United States and the European Union have made strong commitments to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud following a bombing that targeted him near the presidential palace on March 18. The attack, which occurred at the Eel-Gaabta intersection as the president was enroute to the frontlines of the war against militant groups, resulted in multiple casualties.
In an official statement, the U.S. government condemned the attack in the strongest terms and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. The statement also wished a swift recovery to the injured.
“The American people reaffirm their unwavering support for the Somali people. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and wish a speedy recovery to those wounded,” read the statement from the U.S. State Department’s Africa Affairs division.
Additionally, the United States pledged continued and reinforced support to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his administration, emphasizing its commitment to stability and security in Somalia. The statement also commended the Somali National Army for its progress in combating terrorism on the frontlines.
Similarly, the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to backing Somalia’s federal government in its fight against extremist groups.
“The European Union remains firmly committed to supporting Somalia’s fight against terrorist organizations,” the EU’s statement read.
Meanwhile, the governments of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar strongly condemned the assassination attempt, expressing their firm stance against terrorism in all its forms.
The attack, which the president survived, took place in the Hamar-Jabab district of Mogadishu at approximately 10:32 AM on Tuesday, between Eel-Gaabta intersection and the city’s main port.
