Mogadishu, December 20, 2025 — The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) carried out airstrikes against al-Shabaab militants in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region on December 18, 2025, following intense clashes between the group and government-aligned forces, officials said.
According to an AFRICOM statement, the strikes targeted al-Shabaab positions near the town of Nur Dugle, located approximately 215 kilometers northeast of Mogadishu. The operation was conducted in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali Armed Forces.
“AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten the U.S. homeland, our forces, and our citizens abroad,” the command said.
The airstrikes came hours after al-Shabaab fighters launched attacks on government positions and allied local militia forces in the area, sparking hours-long fighting. Residents told local media that heavy clashes erupted, with both sides using light and heavy weapons. Explosions and sustained gunfire were reportedly heard from surrounding areas, underscoring the intensity of the confrontation.
While no official casualty figures have been released, preliminary reports indicate that the fighting resulted in deaths and injuries on both sides.
The latest airstrikes highlight the continued volatility in central Somalia, where al-Shabaab maintains an active presence despite ongoing counterterrorism operations by Somali forces and their international partners. AFRICOM has repeatedly stated that such operations are aimed at weakening the militant group’s operational capabilities and supporting Somalia’s efforts to restore security and stability.
