Fierce clashes erupted today on the outskirts of Hudur, the capital of Bakool region, between Somali government forces and Al-Shabaab militants. Reports indicate that the battle took place in Abagbeday, approximately 20 km east of Hudur, with both sides using heavy weaponry, according to local sources.
The fighting later spread to nearby villages, with gunfire and explosions heard from a distance.
Speaking to state media, Colonel Yunis Adan Hassan, the commander of the 9th battalion of the Somali National Army (SNA), confirmed that government forces inflicted heavy losses on Al-Shabaab and forced them to retreat. However, he did not disclose exact casualty figures.
He also stated that troops managed to seize weapons and military supplies from the militants following their defeat.
This development comes as Al-Shabaab fighters, fleeing military operations in Middle Shabelle, have been moving into the Bay and Bakool regions with their combat vehicles. General Hassan Isac Omar, also known as Hassan Baidoa, the commander of the 60th division of the SNA, noted that security forces are closely monitoring their movements.
“We know the enemy was expelled from Middle Shabelle after suffering heavy losses. They are now heading toward South West State, particularly the Bay and Bakool regions. Our forces are ready to counter their plans, just as we successfully did in other regions,” General Hassan Baidoa stated.
He also instructed government troops in the area to remain on high alert and prevent any Al-Shabaab attacks.
“I have ordered all commanders in the 60th division to stay vigilant, secure their positions, and defend the region from enemy threats,” he added.
