Cabinet Approves Strategic Agreements, Strengthens Ties with Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan has committed to supporting Somalia in the development of its energy sector, specifically in oil, gas, and renewable energy, a partnership that has now been formally approved.

Today, the Cabinet of Ministers, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, convened to discuss the overall security situation in Somalia. The meeting focused on accelerating operations aimed at liberating areas where terrorist groups are hiding, following significant successes by the national and local forces.

The Cabinet also approved the appointment of key figures within Somalia’s agricultural and land services sector: Abdi Mohamed Hussein was named Director-General, while Liban Abdi Hassan was appointed Deputy Director.

These appointments were made upon the recommendation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Government of Somalia.

Additionally, the meeting endorsed a memorandum of understanding between the governments of Somalia and Azerbaijan concerning issues related to oil and gas. This agreement is part of a broader effort to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. Earlier this month, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud led a delegation to Azerbaijan, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations.

Previous agreements between the two nations include boosting educational collaboration, offering scholarships to Somali students, advancing research, and fostering innovation. On defense and security, both governments have agreed to enhance cooperation in military training, counterterrorism efforts, and improving security institutions. There was also consensus on modernizing public administration, enhancing public services, and promoting good governance.
