Disaster of Corruption: SoDMA Accused of Selling Aid in Mogadishu Markets

The Somali National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has reportedly become the most corrupt institution among all government agencies in the country.

According to credible sources, the leadership of SoDMA has been accused of diverting humanitarian aid, specifically food and medicine, meant for vulnerable Somali communities, and selling it in the open markets of Mogadishu.

Reliable reports indicate that the agency’s Director, Mahmoud Maalin Abdulle, has been directly involved in these practices. He allegedly opened a private warehouse in Mogadishu’s bustling Bakara Market, where donated food and medical supplies are sold for profit. These donations were intended for those in desperate need.

A man named Mohamed Mukhtar, officially tasked with procurement and goods distribution at SoDMA, has been identified as the key figure handling these transactions. Mukhtar is no stranger to controversy; he was previously linked to bribery during the parliamentary elections in Hirshabelle, where he served as a member of the regional election committee. At the time, he allegedly made up to $500,000 by charging fees to candidates securing parliamentary seats, funds he used to purchase property in Mogadishu.

In another alarming incident, SoDMA recently delivered several cartons of expired COVID-19 medicine to Maqakori district. The expired drugs were discovered and publicly exposed by local residents.
