The city of Doha, Qatar, will host a high-level ministerial meeting this coming Sunday, focusing on Somalia’s future within the framework of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The event, convened by the Somalia Contact Group—established in 2007—will bring together ministers and representatives from OIC member states.
Scheduled to run for two days, the summit aims to mobilize increased international support for Somalia, with special attention to enhancing security, promoting development, stabilizing governance, and addressing recurring natural disasters, particularly the severe droughts that have repeatedly devastated the nation.
Doha last hosted a similar forum in 2019, where discussions revolved around Somalia’s key challenges, notably security threats and the pressing need to build effective governmental institutions that uphold good governance, transparency, social justice, and respect for human rights.
At that time, Qatar pledged $25 million in financial aid to Somalia, contributing towards the country’s debt relief efforts in coordination with the World Bank. Beyond financial assistance, Qatar has been actively involved in development projects across Somalia, funding the construction of schools, hospitals, health centers, and housing for vulnerable communities.
Additionally, Qatar has played a significant role in the development of Hobyo Port and has provided security assistance through collaborations with the United Nations, aligning its efforts with those of the African Union, particularly the AU Somalia Mission (AUSSOM).
