Former President of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, has issued a stern warning to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, cautioning against the dangers of prioritizing narrow, self-serving political alliances over national unity and collective interest. He accused the current President of trampling on the Provisional Constitution, thereby placing the country on a dangerous trajectory that could undermine its unity and stability.
In a strongly worded written statement, Farmaajo directly accused President Hassan Sheikh of deliberately violating several key constitutional articles — specifically Articles 87, 50, 92, and 65. These provisions clearly outline the responsibilities of safeguarding the Constitution, preserving national unity, ensuring the inclusive role of the National Consultative Council in critical decisions, maintaining the integrity of federal structures, and upholding the neutrality of parliamentary leadership, who are prohibited from aligning with any political party or movement.
Farmaajo urged President Hassan Sheikh to honor the commitments made including holding National Consultative Forum, expand political inclusion, lead the country with unity and consensus, and return to a path of lawful, inclusive governance capable of guiding Somalia through its current challenges.
“I specifically urge the President to reconsider the unilateral decisions that have become a source of political conflict — including the disregard for the Constitution under which he was elected, the formation of election laws and committees without broad consensus, and the dismantling of the National Consultative Council, actions which have created avoidable political rifts,” the statement read.
Farmaajo also condemned the alleged misuse of public resources for partisan political campaigns, expressing disappointment over what he described as the illegal deployment of the elite Banaadiri security forces, the exploitation of state media, and the involvement of civil servants in political activities — all for the benefit of a specific political group.
In conclusion, he called on President Hassan Sheikh to re-engage with federal member states that have withdrawn from the National Consultative Council meetings and to facilitate regional elections by allowing term-expired state leaders to proceed without obstruction. Farmaajo emphasized that restoring trust and inclusivity is essential to navigating Somalia out of its current political crisis.
