A group of former Somali presidents, prime ministers, ministers, ambassadors, and opposition leaders have jointly declared the collapse of the National Consultative Council, citing what they describe as failed leadership and rising political polarization under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
In a strongly worded joint press statement, the opposition figures expressed deep concern over the escalating political tension in the country. They accused President Hassan Sheikh of abandoning his expected role as a unifying national leader, and instead pursuing divisive political alliances that undermine efforts toward national dialogue.
“The country is going through a critical phase and faces serious challenges,” the statement reads. “President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was expected to host an inclusive national forum that would bring together the federal government, federal member states, and opposition leaders to tackle key issues—ranging from countering terrorism to resolving political disputes surrounding constitutional reforms, elections, and the weakening of the national army.”
The signatories also issued a direct warning to the president regarding his alleged actions in Jubbaland, accusing him of interfering with the region’s autonomy and engaging in what they referred to as “destabilizing maneuvers.”
Signed by 16 prominent political figures—including former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Ministers Hassan Ali Khaire, Mohamed Hussein Roble, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, and Abdi Farah Shirdon (Saacid)—the statement represents a rare show of unity among Somalia’s opposition elite.
In a pointed message, the signatories urged the leaders of Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and South West State to respect the will of their constituents, especially as their terms have expired. They called on these leaders to organize free and fair elections and to resist aligning with any efforts by President Hassan Sheikh to erode the foundations of Somalia’s federal system.
