Members of Somalia’s Federal Parliament’s Lower House convened today and approved the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Bill following an extensive debate and a comprehensive legislative process that included three official readings.
Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, announced the passage of the bill after a vote conducted by a show of hands. The Speaker confirmed that 136 MPs voted in favor, 4 opposed, and none abstained — officially passing the IDP Bill into law.
The Speaker emphasized the importance of the legislation, noting that Somalia is home to a large number of internally displaced persons who urgently require legal protection and access to basic social services.
Following the vote, State Minister for Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, Saad Mohamednur Aliyo, expressed gratitude to the MPs for enacting this critical bill. He underscored that it represents a major step forward for the rights and dignity of Somalia’s displaced populations.
The newly passed bill is expected to significantly strengthen the protection of IDPs’ rights across the country and accelerate the delivery of essential services to improve their living conditions. The legislation was formally presented to Parliament by the Ministry of Interior on behalf of the Somali Federal Government.
