More than 100 members of both houses of Somalia’s Federal Parliament have issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over the country’s escalating political crisis. The lawmakers voiced alarm at what they described as an undemocratic trajectory, driven by unilateral decisions taken without broad-based consultation within the National Consultative Council.
The MPs asserted that the Council’s recent decisions do not reflect the collective will of Somalia’s political stakeholders but instead represent the agenda of a single political party.
In a direct appeal to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the lawmakers called on him to:
- Return to the constitutional and legal framework of the country and uphold the Provisional Constitution.
- Initiate a genuine national dialogue that includes all political stakeholders across the country.
- Immediately halt any military or confrontational actions targeting Jubbaland, warning that such steps could ignite further conflict and deepen national divisions.
The lawmakers also warned the federal government against plunging the nation into political, security, and social turmoil. They emphasized that if President Hassan Sheikh fails to heed these critical recommendations, they will formally urge him to resign in the interest of national unity, governance stability, and the future of the Somali people.
“We affirm that all the political decisions emerging from the National Consultative Council were dictated by a single political group,” the statement read. “If President Hassan Sheikh refuses to reverse course, we officially call on him to step down honorably.”
The political rift between the federal government institutions and some key political actors has reached its peak, with growing calls from within Parliament and the broader political sphere demanding accountability and a new direction.
