Dhusamareb, Somalia — Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday officially closed the Heritage Institute for Policy Studies’ Annual Forum in Dhusamareb, announcing that oil drilling operations are set to begin in Galmudug State in May 2026.
Speaking shortly after his arrival in the Galmudug capital, the Prime Minister said the planned hydrocarbon extraction marks a significant step in Somalia’s economic development and broader efforts to rebuild state institutions. He described the current period as a pivotal phase for the country, citing progress in security, economic recovery, and diplomacy.
Barre pointed to recent peaceful elections in Mogadishu as evidence of growing democratic stability and public confidence in governance. He said improvements in security and international engagement have strengthened Somalia’s ability to defend its sovereignty, thanking international partners for their continued support for the country’s unity and territorial integrity.
Addressing the humanitarian situation, the Prime Minister acknowledged that approximately 4.4 million Somalis are affected by severe drought, many of whom require urgent and sustained humanitarian assistance. He stressed that economic development efforts must go hand in hand with responding to humanitarian needs.
On the political front, Barre called on Somali leaders to embrace unity and inclusive dialogue, reaffirming that the federal government remains open to consultations in Mogadishu. However, he underscored that Somalia will not accept any actions that undermine its sovereignty or territorial integrity, adding that both the government and the public remain united against any attempts to divide the country.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Barre was welcomed to Dhusamareb by Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoorqoor), the vice president, cabinet ministers, and members of the local community. His visit focused on concluding the Heritage Forum, which this year addressed key issues related to politics, security, and the reconstruction of Somali state institutions. During his stay, Barre is also scheduled to hold meetings with Galmudug leaders and community representatives to discuss peace and development initiatives.
