President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a high-level meeting in Mogadishu with General Michael E. Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), to discuss strengthening the Somalia–U.S. security partnership.
During the meeting, President Hassan underscored the importance of accelerating joint efforts to eliminate Al-Shabaab and enhancing coordination within the broader multi-partner framework, including the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The discussions aimed to reinforce collective counter-terrorism operations and strategic planning between the two nations.
In a parallel engagement, Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Fiqi, accompanied by Chief of the Somali National Army, Gen. Odawa Yusuf Raage, met with U.S. Ambassador to Somalia Richard H. Riley and Gen. Langley, along with senior AFRICOM officials.
Their dialogue focused on scaling up joint operations against Al-Shabaab and ISIS—groups that continue to pose a threat to Somalia’s security and regional stability. The discussions also covered advancing current military operations, strengthening the capacity of Somali forces through training, equipment support, and enhanced intelligence sharing.
Minister Ahmed Fiqi extended appreciation to the United States for its unwavering support in Somalia’s security efforts, particularly in air support, force development, and the ongoing liberation of territories from extremist control.
