Prime Minister Hamza Urges Urgent Drought Support After COP30 Briefing

Mogadishu, February 14, 2026 – Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, on Friday attended a high-level event outlining the Federal Government’s achievements at the COP30 Climate Change Conference held in Brazil, as the country faces severe drought conditions.

During the briefing, officials presented a comprehensive report detailing Somalia’s efforts to address climate change impacts, including environmental restoration initiatives, flood mitigation strategies, and plans to unlock climate-related financing and investment opportunities in the environmental sector.

Prime Minister Hamza commended the Somali delegation for its active engagement in international climate negotiations. He stated that Somalia has entered meaningful discussions with the international community on securing greater access to climate finance and compensation for loss and damage caused by climate change, particularly from developed and industrialised nations.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the Federal Government has established a dedicated ministry responsible for environmental affairs and climate change, underscoring the administration’s commitment to addressing recurrent droughts, environmental degradation, and strengthening climate resilience.

Highlighting the humanitarian situation, Hamza warned that Somalia is currently experiencing an acute drought that requires immediate assistance and sustained international support. He announced that the government has created a special national fund to mobilise resources for drought-affected communities.

In addition, the Prime Minister said he has been engaging ambassadors from partner countries, as well as international organisations, to seek increased humanitarian backing. He also called on Somali religious leaders, business figures, scholars, and philanthropists to contribute to national relief efforts, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in supporting vulnerable communities during the worsening climate crisis.

The event marked Somalia’s effort to showcase its climate agenda while reinforcing appeals for urgent drought assistance.
