In a significant blow to the Al-Shabaab militant group, Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has announced the successful elimination of a high-ranking Al-Shabaab commander in a targeted operation carried out by its elite Gaashaan forces.
According to an official press statement released by NISA, the commander, who was responsible for orchestrating mortar attacks in Mogadishu since 2023, was killed last night in a meticulously planned operation in the Sabiid area of the Lower Shabelle region. Although NISA did not disclose the name of the commander, the statement confirmed that he and all his personal guards were neutralized during the raid.
“NISA forces, who had been closely monitoring the movements of this commander, executed the operation after confirming intelligence reports. All militants providing security to the target were also eliminated on site,” the statement read.
In addition to the Sabiid operation, NISA reported the successful completion of six airstrike missions in the Ceel Hareeri area of the Hiiraan region between yesterday and last night. These strikes reportedly killed 46 Al-Shabaab operatives, including field commanders and foot soldiers.
These operations come amid an intensified counter-terrorism campaign, as NISA Director General Abdullahi Mohamed Ali “Sambaloolshe” has been present on the frontlines in Hiiraan for the past two days, overseeing and supporting the ongoing military offensives against Al-Shabaab.
