Somalia and Ethiopia Issue Joint Statement Following High-Level Talks in Mogadishu

Somalia and Ethiopia have issued a joint communiqué following the visit of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, earlier today.

According to the statement, Abiy’s visit comes after months of consecutive discussions between the two nations, reinforcing the normalization of bilateral relations and paving the way for closer cooperation.

The communiqué reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to working together in advancing shared interests, promoting peace and security, and strengthening diplomatic ties for the well-being of their citizens and the broader Horn of Africa region.

“The two leaders reaffirmed their pledge to enhance cooperation for mutual benefit,” the statement read.

Recognizing the deep historical ties between their peoples and the shared border that connects them, both leaders stressed the importance of building trust by deepening diplomatic, economic, and social collaboration.

Furthermore, the two leaders welcomed the commencement of the technical talks in Ankara, as agreed in the Ankara Declaration, underscoring their commitment to constructive dialogue and cooperation. They also welcomed the understanding reached between the Somali National Army (SNA) and Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) commanders, recognizing it as a critical step toward enhancing security cooperation and fostering stability in the region.

For decades, Somalia and Ethiopia have shared a complex history—one filled with cultural ties, economic interdependence, and at times, political tensions. However asper the communique, both leaders are now looking ahead, emphasizing their shared vision for peace and prosperity.
