Mogadishu, December 18, 2025 — Somalia and Ethiopia have reaffirmed their commitment to mutual respect for sovereignty and unity while strengthening cooperation to address shared security challenges in the Horn of Africa.
Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalan Abdi Ali, held a high-level meeting in Mogadishu on Thursday with Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Somalia, Suleiman Dedefo Woshe. The talks focused on deepening bilateral relations and enhancing strategic cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed the overall security situation in the region and stressed the importance of continued collaboration to counter terrorism, cross-border crime, and political instability. They underscored the need for coordinated responses to regional challenges in order to promote lasting peace, stability, and development.
The discussions also covered opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, investment, and economic development, including infrastructure projects that could benefit both nations. Officials highlighted the longstanding historical ties between Somalia and Ethiopia and expressed a shared desire to translate diplomatic engagement into practical outcomes for their populations.
Both Minister Abdisalan and Ambassador Woshe agreed on the importance of respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as a foundation for preventing conflict and fostering regional harmony.
Ethiopia remains a key contributor to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), with Ethiopian troops deployed along border areas and in parts of southern Somalia to support ongoing security operations.
The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge from both sides to strengthen bilateral cooperation and work closely together in pursuit of stability, prosperity, and stronger regional partnerships.
