The Federal Government of Somalia has released further details regarding recent aerial strikes targeting ISIS militants operating in parts of the Bari region in Puntland.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Information, the airstrikes were conducted in collaboration between the Federal Government of Somalia and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM). The statement confirmed that two precision airstrikes were carried out.
“The first airstrike took place on May 31, 2025, approximately 75 kilometers south of Bosaso city. The second strike occurred on June 1, 2025, about 72 kilometers south of Bosaso in the Bari region,” the statement read.
The government did not disclose the exact number of casualties or the extent of damage resulting from the two operations conducted on May 31 and June 1.
“These operations are part of the ongoing joint efforts to weaken the capabilities of ISIS-Somalia, also known as the Khawarij, particularly in their planning and execution of terrorist attacks that pose a threat to Somali civilians, national security forces, and international partners,” the statement continued.
The Somali Federal Government expressed its gratitude to AFRICOM for its support through targeted aerial strikes against designated terrorist groups such as ISIS and Al-Shabaab. The government also reaffirmed its firm commitment to eradicating terrorism in all its forms, working hand-in-hand with the Somali people and international allies.
