The Minister of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, on Sunday received the British Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires to Somalia, Sam Thomas, for talks focused on strengthening bilateral defence and security cooperation.
The meeting, held in Mogadishu, reviewed ongoing collaboration between Somalia and the United Kingdom, with particular emphasis on defence coordination, military training, and joint efforts to counter terrorism.
Minister Fiqi expressed appreciation for the United Kingdom’s continued support to Somalia’s security sector, highlighting assistance aimed at developing the Somali National Army and enhancing institutional capacity. He underscored the importance of sustained international partnerships as Somalia works to consolidate security gains and assume greater responsibility for national defence.
For his part, Mr. Thomas reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s security institutions and expanding cooperation to promote peace and stability. He said London remains ready to deepen engagement in line with Somalia’s security transition and stabilization priorities.
The talks come amid ongoing operations by Somali security forces against militant groups and broader government efforts to strengthen defence capabilities and reduce reliance on international forces. The United Kingdom remains one of Somalia’s key international partners, providing support across security, governance, humanitarian assistance, and development.
