Somalia Takes Helm of UN Security Council in January Presidency

Mogadishu / New York, January 1, 2026 — Somalia has officially assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of January 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic recovery and renewed international engagement.

The presidency places Somalia at the head of the UN’s most powerful body responsible for maintaining international peace and security, a role widely seen as a symbol of growing global confidence in the Federal Government’s leadership and diplomatic capacity. Throughout the month, Somalia’s delegation will set and manage the Council’s agenda, chair all meetings, and facilitate negotiations among the 15 member states on critical international issues.

As president of the Council, Somalia will oversee debates, guide the adoption of resolutions, and issue presidential statements on behalf of the UNSC. The role comes at a time of heightened global uncertainty, with ongoing conflicts, peacekeeping challenges, and questions surrounding compliance with international law requiring careful and balanced stewardship.

Diplomats say the presidency reflects Somalia’s re-emergence as an active and influential participant in international affairs. Officials have indicated that Somalia intends to use the platform to promote multilateralism, collective security, and dialogue-driven solutions to global and regional security challenges, particularly within Africa.

Somalia joined the Security Council last year as a non-permanent member for the 2025–2026 term, alongside Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama. The current tenure marks the country’s second time serving on the Council. Its first term, in 1971–1972, was cut short by the onset of prolonged civil war and state collapse, making the January 2026 presidency a powerful symbol of Somalia’s renewed global standing.
