The Chairperson of Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC), Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan, has revealed that electoral experts from Somaliland are actively supporting efforts to organize Somalia’s upcoming one-person, one-vote elections.
Speaking at a press briefing today, Chairman Abdikarin announced that two experts from Somaliland have been integrated into the National Electoral and Boundaries Commission. He emphasized that these individuals bring valuable experience in local council elections—an area in which Somaliland has long-standing expertise.
“The Electoral and Boundary Commission includes two Somaliland experts who have in-depth knowledge of organizing local council elections. Given Somaliland’s track record in this area, we’re drawing from their experience and insight to help guide our preparations,” Chairman Abdikarin said.
He added that their primary focus is to establish a sound electoral process, starting with well-organized local elections.
“A functioning nation starts with a healthy district that elects a functional region, which then contributes to a stable state—and only then can we have a strong central government. That’s why we’re prioritizing clean and credible local council elections,” he emphasized.
Chairman Abdikarin’s remarks come at a time when voter registration for local council elections is actively underway in various districts across Mogadishu, the capital of the Banadir region.
