Las Anod — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday attended the inauguration of the newly elected president of Somalia’s Northeastern State, marking a key moment in the region’s political and constitutional development.
The ceremony, held in Las Anod, saw Abdulqadir Ahmed Aw Ali, widely known as Firdhiye, formally sworn in as president of the Northeastern State of Somalia. The event was also attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, federal ministers, and leaders from Somalia’s federal member states, underscoring the Federal Government’s support for the new regional administration.
Diplomats and representatives from Djibouti, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Kenya were present, alongside officials from Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State and other invited guests. Their participation highlighted international and regional backing for Somalia’s federal system and ongoing state-building efforts.
Officials said the inauguration represents an important step in strengthening cooperation between the Federal Government and regional administrations, while promoting dialogue, governance, and development in the Sool region and beyond.
Las Anod, which has been at the center of political and security tensions in recent years, has gained increased strategic significance. The swearing-in of the Northeastern State leadership is viewed by authorities as part of broader efforts to advance political arrangements, reinforce federal governance, and support stability in northern Somalia.
