Mogadishu, Somalia — Somali security forces on Thursday night foiled a suicide attack outside the General Dhagabadan military base in Mogadishu’s Wadajir district, according to a new statement from the Somali National Army (SNA).
Army officials said soldiers guarding the entrance spotted a man wearing an explosive vest attempting to enter the base and shot him before he could detonate. The attacker had reportedly moved into a line of soldiers, raising suspicion moments before he was neutralized.
“The Somali National Army shot dead a suicide bomber at the entrance of General Dhagabadan base,” the SNA statement said. “The forces were fully alert and stopped him as he tried to access the camp.”
The attempted attack resulted in casualties among some of the soldiers on duty, particularly those assigned to guard positions. Authorities did not release specific numbers.
Security forces quickly secured the area, and the Army Command said the situation is now stable. “The security of the base and its surroundings is fully under control,” the statement added.
The incident comes after months of relative calm in Mogadishu. Al-Shabaab has targeted the General Dhagabadan base several times in the past, as it remains one of the main training and operational hubs for the Somali National Army.
