A senior Jubaland police commander has been confirmed dead following fierce fighting on Monday morning at a military base in Tuulo Amiin village, Gedo region, according to local sources and security officials.
The attack—described as highly coordinated—was reportedly carried out by Somali federal government forces led by Abdirashid Janan, the newly appointed head of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) for Gedo region.
Colonel Hussein Giif, the Jubaland Police Commander for Gedo, was killed in the battle, multiple security sources confirmed. The Jubaland administration has yet to make an official statement on his death.
Reports also indicate that several Jubaland soldiers were either killed or wounded during the raid. The attacking forces seized weapons and military vehicles from the base and displayed prisoners captured alive.
Jubaland’s Minister of Internal Security confirmed the death of Hussein Wali Ali (commonly known as Hussein Giif), who also served as the Deputy Commander of Jubaland’s Police Force. He extended condolences to the people of Jubaland and to the commander’s family.
The minister strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a “heinous act” and directly accusing federal forces of orchestrating the assault. He called for all those involved in the attack to be brought to justice.
As of now, the federal government of Somalia has not issued any official statement regarding the operation. Further details are expected in the coming hours.
