Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud last night in Ankara, reaffirming Turkey’s unwavering commitment to Somalia’s security, territorial integrity, and economic development.
During the meeting at the Turkish Presidential Complex, Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s special focus on Somalia’s peace and stability, pledging continued support for long-term security efforts, including cooperation with Ethiopia.
As a longstanding strategic ally of Somalia, Turkey has consistently provided humanitarian aid, military training, and development assistance. Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s full support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity.
A statement from the Turkish Communications Directorate highlighted discussions on strengthening counterterrorism cooperation, with Erdogan assuring Somalia of Turkey’s steadfast backing in its fight against extremist groups.
“Turkey will continue supporting Somalia in its battle against terrorism,” Erdogan declared, stressing the importance of security collaboration between the two nations.
The talks also focused on enhancing economic, trade, and defense ties. Both leaders explored ways to boost bilateral trade and deepen defense industry cooperation, showcasing Turkey’s commitment to Somalia’s long-term progress.
Turkey actively participates in rebuilding Somalia’s infrastructure, healthcare, and education sectors. This high-level meeting further solidifies the strategic partnership between the two nations.
The discussions also align with Turkey’s broader diplomatic strategy in Africa, where it seeks to expand economic, security, and political cooperation while promoting regional stability.
As Somalia continues its offensive against Al-Shabaab, particularly in the Middle Shabelle region, Turkish military aid has been crucial. Turkey has previously supplied Somalia with Akinci combat drones and T129 ATAK helicopters to support security operations.
