Mogadishu, February 13, 2026 – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday received a senior United Kingdom delegation led by the Minister of State for Development and Africa, Baroness Jenny Chapman, during her first official visit to Mogadishu, where the UK announced more than £6 million in new humanitarian funding to address Somalia’s escalating drought crisis.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Palace, focused on strengthening strategic cooperation between Somalia and the UK in the areas of security, state-building, economic development, and investment. President Hassan Sheikh briefed the delegation on progress made in stabilization efforts, counterterrorism operations, institutional reforms, and the country’s ongoing democratic transition.
He emphasized the importance of the longstanding partnership between Somalia and the United Kingdom, particularly in security cooperation, development support, and investment promotion. The President also expressed gratitude for Britain’s continued backing, especially in counterterrorism efforts, security sector reform, and the implementation of development programs aimed at improving the lives of Somali citizens.
Baroness Chapman outlined what she described as a strategic shift in the UK’s approach to Somalia, moving from a traditional donor-recipient model to an investment-driven development partnership focused on strengthening resilience and expanding economic opportunities. The newly announced £6 million drought relief funding forms part of a broader £61 million UK package allocated for the 2025–2026 financial year to address both immediate humanitarian needs and the root causes of recurring crises.
The funding will be delivered through established mechanisms, including the African Risk Capacity and the Start Network, to ensure rapid support for vulnerable communities affected by drought.
During her visit, the Minister also met with leadership from the United Nations Support Office in Somalia and the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia to reaffirm the UK’s commitment to Somalia’s long-term security and stability.
Both sides agreed to maintain close engagement and deepen collaboration in areas of mutual interest, underscoring the shared view that Somalia’s stability is critical to the broader Horn of Africa region.
