The United Nations Security Council has expressed deep concern over the illegal flow of weapons into Somalia from Yemen, a violation of the arms embargo imposed on the militant group Al-Shabaab.
The arms embargo is part of a broader international effort to curb Al-Shabaab’s activities, which remain a primary driver of instability in Somalia and the wider region.
Yemen, itself embroiled in prolonged conflict, has become a key source of illicit arms, exacerbating Somalia’s security challenges. The UN Security Council has repeatedly emphasized the need for strict enforcement of the embargo to prevent Al-Shabaab from bolstering its military capabilities.
The UN has urged member states to strengthen their efforts in monitoring and intercepting illegal arms shipments. It has also called for enhanced cooperation with regional organizations such as the African Union and IGAD to tackle the issue effectively.
