Mixed Reactions Follow President Mohamud’s Eid Address on Unity and Security

The coming months will test whether political leaders can seize this opportunity to move Somalia forward together.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud used his Eid al-Fitr address to emphasize Somalia’s commitment to defeating Al-Shabaab while calling for national unity and political dialogue.

He praised the Somali National Army (SNA) for their efforts, urging them to remain vigilant as victory nears. Strengthening, equipping, and modernizing the army remains his administration’s top priority. “Our people depend on you—do not rest until Somalia is free of this menace,” he stated.

Mohamud reassured the public that Al-Shabaab’s reign of fear is coming to an end. He encouraged citizens to play an active role in shaping the nation’s future, declaring, “This is a battle between truth and falsehood, and as the Qur’an assures us, truth will prevail.”

Beyond security, the president extended an open invitation for dialogue to political leaders and stakeholders, urging them to set aside differences and contribute to a united, democratic Somalia. “Now is the time for collective leadership, compromise, and national progress,” he stressed.

Regional leaders responded swiftly. Jubbaland’s President Ahmed Madobe, despite previous disputes with the federal government, welcomed the initiative as a crucial step toward resolving national challenges. Former Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble echoed this sentiment, calling for sincere engagement in the process.

Key opposition figures, including former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and MP Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, also voiced support, emphasizing that national unity is essential in the face of terrorism and shifting global politics.

Former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo backed the initiative, underscoring the need for inclusive discussions to address Somalia’s political and security crises. He urged all relevant stakeholders to participate fully in the talks.

As Somalia battles internal divisions and security threats, Mohamud’s call for unity and dialogue signals a pivotal moment in the country’s efforts to rebuild and stabilize. The coming months will test whether political leaders can seize this opportunity to move Somalia forward together.
