Somali and Ugandan Presidents Forge Stronger Security Ties in Kampala Meeting

During the talks, the two leaders engaged in productive and forward-looking discussions focused on regional security and the launch of a new African Union-led mission.

The Presidents of Somalia and Uganda held high-level discussions on several key security issues during a significant meeting in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. This one-day visit by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was made at the official invitation of his Ugandan counterpart, President Yoweri Museveni.

During the talks, the two leaders engaged in productive and forward-looking discussions focused on regional security and the launch of a new African Union-led mission. They emphasized the critical need to maintain peace and stability across the Horn of Africa.

A major point of agreement was their joint endorsement of the launch of AUSSOM, the African Union Stabilization Support Operation in Somalia—a new mission aimed at supporting Somalia’s long-term security and counterterrorism efforts.

The two presidents also reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating international support for Somalia’s National Security Development Plan, particularly efforts to strengthen the Somali National Army and expand its operational capacity.

Another key outcome of the meeting was a renewed focus on implementing the defense cooperation agreement previously signed between the two nations. Both leaders instructed the relevant agencies to fast-track its execution.

President Hassan Sheikh expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation, and in return, extended a formal invitation for President Museveni to visit Mogadishu in the near future.

In response, President Yoweri Museveni thanked President Hassan Sheikh for his visit and graciously accepted the invitation to Somalia’s capital, signaling a continued strengthening of diplomatic and security ties between the two countries.
