Suspected Al-Shabaab militants fired six mortar shells toward Aden Adde International Airport and the heavily fortified Halane compound in Mogadishu on Sunday morning, marking the second consecutive day of mortar attacks in Somali capital Mogadishu.

Two of the shells reportedly struck the Kaawa Godey neighborhood, causing civilian casualties. A resident told Mogadishu-based media that a woman and a boy were wounded in the blasts.

“One of the mortar shells fell in the Kaawa Godey neighborhood this morning, injuring a woman from among the residents. I was also told that another boy was injured,” the resident said.

Somali federal security agencies had not issued any official statement regarding the shelling near the airport and Halane base, which hosts UN offices, foreign embassies, and African Union forces.

The attack comes just a day after mortar rounds hit the Warta Nabada and Boondheere districts on Saturday, wounding at least six civilians, including a staff member at the National Theater, identified as Gurey.

Other rounds landed in residential neighborhoods and busy intersections.

No group has officially claimed responsibility for the latest shelling. However, Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group, has carried out similar indirect fire attacks in the capital in the past, including on the airport, Halane compound, and Villa Somalia.
