Somalia Rekindles Diplomatic Ties with Ukraine Amid Global Power Balancing

During the meeting, both parties signed a formal memorandum aimed at reviving diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Somalia and Ukraine have officially agreed to restore their diplomatic relations following a meeting held yesterday between Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, and Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Mohamed Omar.

During the meeting, both parties signed a formal memorandum aimed at reviving diplomatic ties between the two nations. Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine in reestablishing diplomatic engagement.

While Somalia also maintains relations with Russia, analysts say the country is carefully navigating its foreign policy to maintain a balanced stance—especially when it comes to dealing with global powers that wield veto authority at the United Nations Security Council.

Observers have raised questions about the timing of Somalia’s decision to reengage with Ukraine, which is still at war with Russia. However, others argue that Somalia is pursuing a pragmatic foreign policy, prioritizing its national interests over aligning with any specific geopolitical bloc.
