Morning Chaos in Mogadishu: Mortar Attacks Strike Residential Areas, Leave Civilian Casualties

Such mortar attacks have frequently been carried out by the militant group Al-Shabaab, with targets often including the Presidential Palace and the heavily guarded Halane base.

Fresh details have emerged following a series of mortar shells that landed early this morning in various neighborhoods within Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia, causing both fatalities and injuries.

The mortars, which were launched at dawn, struck areas in the districts of Hamarweyne, Hamarjajab, and Waaberi in the Banadir region. According to reports, some of the shells hit residential homes, while others landed in open spaces.

Reliable sources have confirmed that the attack led to civilian casualties — one person was killed and another injured after the mortars struck their neighborhood homes.

Although the situation has since returned to calm, there has been no official statement from the federal government’s security agencies regarding the incident.

This attack comes shortly after a similar incident where multiple mortar shells targeted the vicinity of the Presidential Palace, with one landing inside the National Theatre compound, injuring a staff member.
