Puntland Defends New Cooperation with Somaliland: “This Is About Security, Not Division”

Puntland’s Minister of Interior, Abdi Farah Said (Juxa), has publicly defended the emerging working relationship between Puntland and Somaliland, clarifying that the collaboration is rooted in mutual security interests—not an attempt to undermine the SSC-Khaatumo administration.

Speaking to the media, Minister Juxa emphasized that the new engagement began with a prisoner exchange, which he described as the first step toward building trust between the two regions. He explained that the talks focus on enhancing border security and peaceful coexistence, not political realignment.

“This is not about harming SSC-Khaatumo. It’s about ensuring peace and fostering neighborly relations based on respect and stability,” said the Minister.

Juxa also reaffirmed Puntland’s long-standing support for the people of SSC, stating that the region has every right to establish its own self-governing administration. He called for inclusive dialogue to determine future governance frameworks, suggesting that peaceful coexistence as two separate administrations is both possible and preferable.

In response to recent actions by SSC leader Firdhiye, Juxa downplayed their significance, saying they do not reflect the broader relationship between Puntland and SSC-Khaatumo. He reassured the public that Puntland remains committed to respecting SSC’s aspirations and will continue to offer its support.
