General Mahamud Ahmed Faadhigo, spokesperson for Operation Hillaac—Puntland’s ongoing counterterrorism campaign against ISIS—has confirmed that the Puntland administration has purchased four combat drones. These drones are intended to support military operations in the rugged Al-Miskaad mountains, where Daesh (ISIS) militants are entrenched.
Speaking to local media, Gen. Faadhigo explained that the acquisition is part of broader efforts to strengthen Puntland’s security forces. He noted that the drones will be used both for aerial surveillance and targeted strikes, offering a strategic advantage in terrain where traditional military vehicles cannot operate.
Although he declined to reveal the source of the drones, Gen. Faadhigo emphasized that the aircraft were high-quality and purchased independently with Puntland’s own funds—denying any foreign assistance in the procurement process.
“These drones will help our forces access areas that vehicles cannot reach. That has been one of our biggest obstacles in chasing down Daesh fighters in remote locations,” he said.
He added that the drones will play a critical role in the upcoming fourth phase of Operation Hillaac, which President Said Abdullahi Deni is expected to announce soon. Specialized units within the Puntland forces are currently being trained to operate the drones effectively.
The arrival of these drones comes at a critical moment, as Puntland recently paused ground operations in Miiraale Valley due to challenges in dislodging entrenched Daesh elements. With the introduction of air support, Puntland hopes to regain momentum in its fight against extremism.
