Somalia and Serbia have agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in key sectors including technology, security, education, and economic development following high-level diplomatic talks held in Belgrade this week.
The discussions took place between Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. MP Isaak Mursal, and Serbia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Damjan Jović, according to official statements released on December 13, 2025. The meeting focused on revitalizing the long-standing friendly relations between Mogadishu and Belgrade and identifying practical areas for deeper collaboration.
During the talks, both sides reviewed the historical ties between the two countries and explored ways to broaden cooperation beyond traditional diplomacy. Priority areas identified included technological innovation, with an emphasis on sharing expertise in modern systems, as well as economic development through increased trade and investment opportunities.
Education was also highlighted as a key pillar of cooperation, with discussions centered on strengthening academic exchanges and expanding scholarship programs. In addition, the two deputy ministers addressed security issues of mutual concern, agreeing on the importance of coordination to enhance stability and safety.
Beyond bilateral matters, the officials discussed the need for closer coordination within international and multilateral forums. They emphasized aligning foreign policy positions to better promote shared interests on the global stage.
Both Deputy Minister Mursal and Deputy Minister Jović reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular political consultations, stressing that sustained dialogue is essential to safeguarding mutual interests and honoring bilateral commitments.
Concluding the visit, Deputy Minister Mursal thanked the Serbian government for the warm reception extended to his delegation in Belgrade and reiterated Somalia’s readiness to deepen its partnership with Serbia in ways that deliver tangible benefits to the people of both nations.
