Somalia and Egypt Agree to Expand Security and Development Cooperation

Cairo, Egypt — Somalia and Egypt have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation on security, development, and regional stability following high-level talks between their foreign ministers in Cairo.

Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, met with Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Badr Abdel Atty, on Saturday, December 22, 2025, on the sidelines of the Second Ministerial Conference of the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum, held in Cairo from December 19 to 20.

The discussions focused on strengthening relations between the two countries and expanding cooperation in key areas, including economic development, investment, security, and institutional capacity-building. Both ministers stressed the importance of translating strong political ties into practical partnerships that support long-term stability and sustainable development.

Minister Abdisalam welcomed Egypt’s continued support for Somalia and reaffirmed Mogadishu’s commitment to closer cooperation with Cairo, particularly in diplomacy and security. He emphasized the value of coordinated regional efforts to promote peace and stability in Somalia and the wider region.

For his part, Dr. Abdel Atty highlighted the positive trajectory of Egypt–Somalia relations and reiterated Egypt’s commitment to deepening strategic cooperation. He noted that the relocation of the Egyptian Embassy headquarters to Mogadishu is expected to enhance diplomatic engagement and improve coordination between the two governments.

The meeting also addressed regional security developments. Egypt renewed its support for Somalia’s stability and that of the Horn of Africa, underscoring the need for sustained international funding for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) to ensure its effectiveness.

Both ministers agreed on the importance of strengthening cooperation to combat terrorism and violent extremism, calling for enhanced regional and international coordination to address shared security challenges.
