Somalia Detains 11 Soldiers for Illegal Arms Carrying as Mogadishu Tightens Election Security

Mogadishu — Somali security authorities have arrested 11 soldiers for illegally carrying weapons in the capital, Mogadishu, as part of intensified security measures ahead of the Banadir Regional Council elections scheduled for December 25, 2025.

According to the Banadir Regional Police Command, the soldiers were apprehended on Tuesday, December 23, during coordinated security operations across several districts of the city. The arrests were carried out by officers from the Central Police Station after the suspects were found violating standing orders that prohibit off-duty security personnel from moving around the capital while armed.

Police officials said the operation is part of broader efforts to strengthen public safety and prevent actions that could endanger civilians, particularly during the sensitive pre-election period. The detained soldiers are currently in custody and will be referred to the appropriate court to face legal proceedings.

“The arrests are meant to enforce existing security directives and ensure full compliance with the law,” the Banadir Regional Police Command said in a statement.

The crackdown comes amid heightened security preparations ordered by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who earlier instructed security forces to safeguard Mogadishu and prevent any disruptions during the local council vote.

As part of the security plan, the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority has announced that Mogadishu’s airport will be closed on election day, with all flights suspended. Authorities say the measure is intended to minimize risks and maintain stability in the capital.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Farataag), confirmed that nearly 10,000 police officers have been deployed and are fully prepared to provide security for the elections. Officials insist the steps are necessary to ensure the polls are conducted peacefully, safely, and fairly.
