Danab Commandos and Jubbaland Forces Retake Kudhaa After Coordinated Counter-Offensive

MOGADISHU — Elite Danab Commandos of the Somali National Army, operating in coordination with Jubbaland State security forces, have launched a major counter-offensive that resulted in the recapture of the coastal town of Kudhaa in the Lower Juba region, following an attack by Al-Shabaab.

Security officials said the joint operation was carried out after militants briefly overran positions in Kudhaa during an early-morning assault on Wednesday. The response involved coordinated ground operations, supported by intelligence-led targeting, and continued for several hours into Thursday.

According to military sources, the counter-offensive inflicted heavy losses on the militants, including the killing of several senior operatives and a large number of fighters who were attempting to flee the area. Weapons, ammunition, and military equipment were also seized during the operation.

Following the clashes, Kudhaa was brought under full control of government forces. Roads leading in and out of the town were temporarily closed to prevent the escape of remaining militants, while security units established a reinforced perimeter to stabilize the area and protect civilians.

Officials credited the success of the operation to close coordination between federal and regional forces, timely intelligence, and sustained pressure on militant positions. Jubbaland authorities said clearing operations are ongoing in surrounding rural areas to eliminate any remaining threats and prevent the group from regrouping.

The operation is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government of Somalia and the Jubbaland State administration to weaken Al-Shabaab’s presence in the Juba regions and restore lasting security for local communities.
