Somali Cabinet Praises Security Forces, Endorses Key Maritime and Postal Reforms

MOGADISHU — The Council of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia held its regular weekly meeting on Thursday, focusing on national security developments, ongoing military operations, and key policy reforms. The session was chaired by Second Deputy Prime Minister Jibriil Abdirashid Haji Abdi.

During the meeting, ministers commended the Somali National Army for their role in defending civilians and maintaining security, particularly following the recent operation in the coastal town of Kudhaa in the Lower Juba region. The Cabinet noted that government forces successfully repelled an attack by Khawarij militants, preventing harm to civilians and restoring stability in the area.

Beyond security matters, the Council approved several significant policy and cooperation frameworks. Ministers endorsed a Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (PSC) among Indian Ocean regional administrations, presented by the Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport. The agreement is intended to strengthen regional maritime cooperation, improve safety standards, and enhance regulatory oversight.

The Cabinet also ratified the National Postal Policy for the period 2025–2030, prepared by the Ministry of Communications and Technology. The policy aims to modernize Somalia’s postal services, expand nationwide coverage, and integrate postal operations into the country’s broader digital and economic development plans.

In addition, ministers received briefings on the Integrated Performance Management Policy, designed to improve efficiency and accountability across government institutions, as well as updates on preparations for the National Political Consultative Conference announced by the DanQaran Government.

The Council reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening security, advancing institutional reforms, and promoting inclusive political dialogue as part of broader efforts to achieve lasting stability and development in Somalia.
