ALGIERS, Algeria — The Chief Justice of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Bashe Yusuf Ahmed, is participating in a high-level continental judicial forum in Algiers, bringing together leaders of Africa’s top constitutional courts to discuss cooperation and the strengthening of constitutional justice.

Chief Justice Bashe Yusuf Ahmed is attending the 19th Session of the Executive Bureau of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa (CJCA), which opened this week in the Algerian capital. The meeting runs from January 21 to 24, 2026, and is hosted under the patronage of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The session has brought together presidents of supreme and constitutional courts from across the African continent to deliberate on key issues related to constitutional justice, judicial independence, and the rule of law. Participants are also discussing mechanisms for harmonizing legal standards and enhancing cooperation among African judicial institutions.

According to organizers, the forum serves as a platform for exchanging experiences on constitutional interpretation, protection of fundamental rights, and the administration of justice within diverse legal systems. Administrative matters related to the future direction of the CJCA and broader judicial collaboration are also on the agenda.

Somalia’s participation underscores its continued engagement with continental legal institutions and its efforts to strengthen judicial governance after years of institutional rebuilding. During the conference, Chief Justice Bashe Yusuf Ahmed is expected to highlight Somalia’s experience in judicial reform, institutional development, and ongoing efforts to ensure an independent and accountable justice system.

The presence of Somalia’s top judicial official at the Algiers meeting reflects the country’s growing role in African legal forums and its commitment to contributing to collective efforts aimed at advancing constitutionalism and the rule of law across the continent.
