ADDIS ABABA, Feb 15, 2026 – The Federal Republic of Somalia has formally acceded to the African Peer Review Mechanism, APRM, becoming the 45th member state of the African Union framework aimed at promoting good governance, transparency, and institutional accountability.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Somalia’s accession during the 35th Ordinary Session of the APR Forum of Heads of State and Government held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The signing marks what officials described as a significant milestone in Somalia’s governance reform journey.
The APRM, established by the African Union, is a voluntary self monitoring and peer review mechanism. It allows member states to assess their political, economic, and corporate governance systems, identify areas requiring reform, and share best practices with other African countries. The mechanism is designed to strengthen accountability and improve the quality of public institutions through constructive peer engagement rather than external oversight.
In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the decision underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to consolidating democratic governance, enhancing institutional accountability, and advancing sound economic management. Officials added that Somalia’s membership reflects a determination at the highest level of state leadership to deepen reforms and promote inclusive socio economic development.
The accession also reinforces Somalia’s role within the African Union’s institutional framework and aligns with the aspirations of Agenda 2063, known as “The Africa We Want,” which focuses on peace, stability, and sustainable development across the continent.
By joining the APRM, Somalia has signaled its readiness to actively participate in continental peer processes and contribute to strengthening governance standards and cooperation among African states.
