ADDIS ABABA, February 16, 2026 – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity during a meeting with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Addis Ababa.
The talks took place on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Union at the AU headquarters, amid increased diplomatic engagement following Somalia’s recent election to the African Union Peace and Security Council for the 2026 to 2028 term.
Youssouf congratulated Somalia on securing the seat, describing it as a well deserved achievement that reflects the country’s growing contribution to continental peace and security deliberations. He reiterated the AU’s continued support for Somalia’s sovereignty and stability, at a time when Mogadishu has emphasized the defense of its territorial integrity in international forums.
The AU Commission Chairperson also addressed funding challenges affecting the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, AUSSOM. He underscored ongoing efforts to strengthen the mission’s operational effectiveness and civilian components. AUSSOM, which replaced the previous AU mission, supports Somali security forces in countering Al Shabaab and stabilizing areas recovered from militant control.
Youssouf further commended the Federal Government of Somalia for advancing inclusive political dialogue and preparations for upcoming elections, describing these efforts as essential to consolidating sustainable peace, stability and long term development.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed appreciation for what he described as the AU’s consistent and principled support for Somalia’s peace and state building process. He reaffirmed Somalia’s readiness to continue close cooperation with the continental body in advancing shared priorities and welcomed sustained AU engagement, particularly in supporting humanitarian response and resilience building initiatives.
