Fresh details have emerged about a heavy battle that took place early this morning in the Beera-yabaal area of Hiiraan region. The fighting involved Somali government forces and local armed residents on one side and Al-Shabaab militants on the other.
The clash began when Al-Shabaab fighters launched an assault on military positions held by the joint forces near Beera-yabaal and Aboorey, both under the Buulaburte district in Hiiraan. In response, government troops and allied local fighters mounted a strong defense, repelling the attackers and inflicting heavy losses on the militant group.
According to government sources, the Somali National Army (SNA) and local forces successfully neutralized several Al-Shabaab fighters and seized weapons and combat vehicles from the militants.
“At dawn today, our forces foiled a desperate attack by the Khawarij (a term used by the government for Al-Shabaab). Pursuit operations are ongoing in the dense forests along the banks of the Shabelle River to track down fleeing militants,” read an official statement from the Somali federal government.
Meanwhile, commanders leading the anti-Al-Shabaab offensive in Hiiraan have told state media that they will soon provide further details on the militants’ losses and how the attack was thwarted.
Reports indicate that government forces and local fighters now fully control the areas where the battle took place, ensuring security and stability in the region.
