The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has conducted a parliamentary by-election in Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug State, to fill the seat for constituency #HOP248.
Mohamed Abdi Hassan (Afweyne), who had been jailed in Belgium for 12 years, was elected to replace Saadaq Omar Hassan, commonly known as Saadaq Joon. Joon lost his parliamentary seat after accepting the position of Deputy Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).
The commission had previously announced elections for vacant seats, including HOP#248 and HOP#049, which were left open following the departures of Saadaq Joon and Mustafa Sheikh Ali (Dhuhulow).
Additionally, three more parliamentary seats remain unfilled—one vacated by NISA Director Abdullahi Mohamed Ali (Sanbaloolshe) and two left vacant due to the passing of MPs Khadija Mohamed Diriye and Mahamud Mohamed Seeseey.
This move follows a directive from the Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Aden Madobe, issued on the 25th of last month, urging the commission to expedite the process of filling all vacant parliamentary seats.
