PM Hamza Abdi Barre Arrives in Cairo for Arab League Summit on Gaza Crisis

Ahead of the summit, officials from Egypt, Jordan, and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations convened in Riyadh on February 21 to lay the groundwork for a unified strategy in response to the worsening situation.

Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has arrived in Cairo, Egypt, to participate in an emergency Arab League summit focused on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The summit, set for March 4, aims to coordinate an Arab response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed plan for Gaza and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s continued military actions, which have hindered ceasefire efforts. Hosted by Egypt, the meeting will explore diplomatic solutions that protect Palestinian rights and improve conditions in Gaza.

Ahead of the summit, officials from Egypt, Jordan, and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations convened in Riyadh on February 21 to lay the groundwork for a unified strategy in response to the worsening situation.

Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to the Palestinian cause at the United Nations Security Council’s 9841st meeting, where the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was a key topic.

Government spokesman Farhan Mohamed Jimale stated that Prime Minister Barre will also hold sideline discussions with regional leaders on rebuilding Somalia’s national army and securing international support for development projects.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the second day of Ramadan, Israel halted all humanitarian aid to Gaza, citing Hamas’s alleged failure to comply with a U.S.-backed proposal to extend a ceasefire. Talks over the next phase of the ceasefire, originally expected to start on March 1, stalled as Israel refused to withdraw its troops from Gaza.
