A President in Anger: Fahad Yasin Criticizes Hassan Sheikh’s Leadership

Fahad described Hassan Sheikh as a president who re-assumed office “while being angry at himself.”

Former Director of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), Fahad Yasin, has criticized President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s leadership, claiming that he returned to power in a state of anger and frustration. Speaking in a lengthy interview with Risala Media, Fahad described Hassan Sheikh as a president who re-assumed office “while being angry at himself.”

According to Fahad, President Hassan Sheikh is now acting in the exact manner he once opposed during the tenure of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo. He advised the president to avoid forming special security forces similar to the controversial “Badbaado Qaran” unit before May 15, 2026.

Fahad also questioned why Hassan Sheikh lacks trust in his allies, consolidating power solely within himself—a move he argues has crippled the government’s efficiency.

“Hassan Sheikh returned to power angry at himself. He has decided not to listen to anyone and simply execute his own decisions,” Fahad remarked.

When asked if there was anything positive about Hassan Sheikh’s tenure, Fahad acknowledged only one thing: the appointment of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

“Even Hamza’s selection stemmed from Hassan Sheikh’s deep-seated grudges, but it turned out to be a good choice. It is essential for a prime minister to be aligned with the president, as the elected leader is ultimately accountable for governance failures,” he added.

Fahad praised Prime Minister Hamza’s work ethic and his ability to implement the president’s decisions without causing internal government disputes.

The former National Security Advisor to ex-President Farmajo also criticized Hassan Sheikh for making history as “the first Somali president to launch an armed attack on his own hometown.”

“He is the first president in the history to launch attack against his own city—this will be remembered. If he continues to alienate his political rivals, the same fate will befall him in the future,” Fahad warned.

In conclusion, he advised Hassan Sheikh to reconcile with those he has alienated and to govern with wisdom.

“Mr. President, do not repeat what you once opposed. You previously stated that life exists beyond the presidency—if fate allows, you will return to power again. But do not pursue it in a destructive manner,” Fahad urged.
