Somalia Shuts Down Gaza Resettlement Proposal, Affirms Support for Palestinian Rights

Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Maalim Fiqi, stated that the government would unconditionally oppose "any proposal or plan from any party that undermines the rights of the Palestinian people to live in their own homeland."

The Federal Government of Somalia and Somaliland have firmly rejected any proposals to resettle Palestinians displaced by the Gaza conflict. On Friday, both have made it clear that they had not received any requests from the United States or Israel regarding a plan to relocate Palestinians, and they openly opposed the idea of using their territories for such purposes.

According to a report from the Associated Press (AP), U.S. and Israeli officials had reached out to Sudanese, Somali, and Somaliland leaders to discuss the potential of using their lands for the resettlement of Palestinians fleeing the conflict in Gaza. Sudan’s government had already rejected the U.S. request, and Somali and Somaliland officials confirmed that they had received no communication from either the U.S. or Israel on the matter, AP reported.

Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Maalim Fiqi, stated that the government would unconditionally oppose “any proposal or plan from any party that undermines the rights of the Palestinian people to live in their own homeland.”

Speaking to Reuters, Fiqi emphasized that Somalia had not received any such requests and that the government strongly opposed any plan to use Somali land for the resettlement of others.

Similarly, Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdirahman Dahir Aden, told Reuters: “We have had no discussions with anyone regarding the resettlement of Palestinians.”
