Somali Lawmaker’s Seat Revoked for Missing Two Consecutive Sessions

Speaker Aden Madoobe instructed that the seat, designated as Hop#201, which represents the northern regions of the country or Somaliland, be filled without delay.

The Speaker of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur (Aden Madoobe), has made a decisive move today by stripping MP Abdullahi Hashi Abib of his seat. This decision comes after repeated criticisms of the federal government led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Abib, who had previously accused the government of corruption and mismanagement, and had submitted reports to international bodies, was officially removed from Parliament after a ruling from Speaker Aden Madoobe. The announcement, issued in a statement from the Speaker’s office, outlined that Abib had lost his membership in the House due to his failure to attend two consecutive parliamentary sessions.

The statement explained, “Dr. Abdullahi Hashi Abib did not attend more than two consecutive sessions of the House and failed to provide a valid excuse for his absence.”

It was further stated, “Therefore, in accordance with Article 59(d) and Article 8(4) of the parliamentary rules of procedure, he has lost his membership in the House of the People.”

Additionally, Speaker Aden Madoobe instructed that the seat, designated as Hop#201, which represents the northern regions of the country or Somaliland, be filled without delay.
