ADDIS ABABA — Somalia has officially assumed a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) for the 2026–2028 term, marking a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic engagement at the continental level.
The Federal Government of Somalia was elected to the 15-member council in February 2026 and will serve a two-year term, reflecting growing confidence among African Union member states in Somalia’s role in advancing regional peace and security.
Somalia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union, Abdullahi Warfaa, formally raised the Somali flag at the council’s headquarters, symbolizing the country’s assumption of its new responsibilities.
Government officials described the development as historic, noting that it strengthens Somalia’s international standing and expands its role in continental decision-making on peace and security issues.
As a member of the council, Somalia is expected to contribute to efforts aimed at conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and stability across Africa, as well as support cooperation in addressing security challenges.
The African Union Peace and Security Council serves as the AU’s primary body responsible for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts across the continent. Somalia’s inclusion is seen as a reflection of its increasing engagement in regional and international affairs.
